The casual good life.

Bald Head Island is somewhat unique in that it is a privately owned resort island and town. It sits at the tip of the Cape Fear coast and is only accessible by boat. The island is also unique in that no cars are allowed!

Bald Head Island's old ferry terminal was sorely over capacity and in such need of updating, that an entirely new site was purchased and plans were drawn to give residents, visitors and vacationers a taste of Bald Head Island beginning at the mainland.

It's all so new! Where do I go?

I worked in partnership with the Owner, General Contractor and client's Planning Team at the early stages in developing usage patterns and wayfinding needs for the site. Since residents are required to keep their cars on the mainland, and with huge daily influxes of seasonal visitors, keeping these groups separated by use while streamlining site traffic was a challenge.

Just follow the signs.

A wayfinding system was developed that combined various tiers of signage for vehicle and pedestrian traffic as well as passenger signage within the terminal buildings and docks. Several signs were designed to use interchangeable components to reduce cost and confusion by making the signs customizable dependent on parking lot capacity and use.

It was amazing to watch the project take shape from raw site to paved, fully developed traffic ways to end use. The end result is that you begin to experience the best qualities of Bald Head Island even before you've left the mainland.

Project(s):

Consulting
Brand Development
Signage Design
Wayfinding

Objectives:

To develop branding and signage consistent with Bald Head Island's established guidelines. Produce signage that is durable and cost-effective for the harsh marine environment. Generate wayfinding solutions for confusion-free vehicle and pedestrian agendas.

Of Note:

Special consideration was given to sign design and placement to maximize their readability and sight lines. Especially given that many are not illuminated.

"Everything came out above our expectations."
